Wedding

I once had a late night conversation
with a lady friend
I asked her,
" what do you think of marriage ? "
like a machine gun
she couldn't stop speaking
and like a shotgun
she couldn't stop spitting

she told me
she wanted to get married by the age of 25
and she'd like a garden wedding with
light bulbs hung high
she told me
she chose the colors at age 10
and by 16
she knew how many stacks she wanted for her cake
she wanted 7
1 for each level of Heaven

I'm not sort of guy who needs to use the toilet
whenever he hears the word
" commitment "
but when I heard that
I got a chill down my spine
and started sweating
my steady hands started shaking
because I don't even know what tuxedo I'll be wearing

my lady friend then
asked me,
" what do you think of marriage ? "
now,
when people ask me about marriage
I often don't know what to say
I have no idea what my wedding will look like
I don't know who my best man will be
I don't know what flowers to get
or who to invite
but when I think of marriage
I can only think of
the woman whom
I will spend the rest of my life with
smile so big
it wont fit in the frame
so the photographer needs to use a satellite
just to take a photo of her
this woman whom
I will marry
will have spotlights for eyes
for how much they glisten
which are reminiscent
of the stars in the night sky
and I imagine they will be on me

when people ask me about marriage
I often don't know what to say
I don't know where I'll be married
I don't know when I'll be married
but I do know this
I do know
I'll be holding her hands
like they were the only pair
I've ever seen in my life
whenever she speaks to me
I'll be so happy
as if the doctor
just broke good news
to the people in the waiting room
if she were champagne
I would get drunk with every step she took
if she were a book
I would read her from cover to cover
and memorize every word
every letter
and keep in mind all the typos
and all the grammar mistakes
because I swear
her imperfections
are the things I love about her the most

when people ask me about marriage
I often don't know what to say
when people ask me about my future wife
I tell them as best I can
but I'm always running out of words
the English language is just not vast enough
because the person who created it
didn't and couldn't anticipate her
but for the woman
whom I will grow old with
it will be so easy for her
she needs not open a dictionary
to ensure there is no man on the face of the Earth
as lucky as me
she will only need to speak 2 words

for the woman
whom I will love
in sickness and in health
she will only need to say,

" I do. "
