I'm not always a love poet
honestly
I don't know what makes a good poem
I'm not even sure if I know what love really is
growing up
people always told me
love is
when you have butterflies swirling in your stomach
day in and day out
every time you close your eyes
all you can see is your lover's gaze
every time you hear their name
you just can't help but put a smile on your face
you feel seasick without being at sea
because you have thunderstorms swimming in your veins
every time you're with them
your heart is beating so fast
it feels like its about to burst out of your chest
like that one scene in the movie "Aliens"
and even if it did happen
you wouldn't mind
because now you can literally
give your heart to the person you love
people tell me
love is giving a person a loaded gun
and trusting them not to shoot you
but even if they do
when you die and go to Heaven
you can brag to all the Angels
about how you died a beautiful death
in the hands of someone you love
and you and I both know
you probably wouldn't shut up about it
that every one in Heaven got so annoyed
they kicked you out
and sent you back to Earth
where you would gladly get shot again and again
now,
I don't know much about love
much less wanting butterflies in my gut
or getting shot
and I'm not always a love poet
but
if I had to write about love
all I would write
is a bunch of letters
that would spell out
your name
people tell me
love is blind
if that's the case
I'll write your name
in Braille
and have it engraved all over my body
so every time you touch me
you know that I am yours
and yours entirely
I'm not always a love poet
but
your name
is the only love poem
I'll ever need to write
